Heavy-Duty TRuck Tool box Manufacturers: An Honest Comparison (2026)

Who makes heavy-duty truck tool boxes?

The main U.S. manufacturers of heavy-duty truck tool boxes are American Truckboxes (ATB), Weather Guard, Decked, Buyers Products, Chandler Truck Accessories and Crescent Jobox. They differ less on quality than on what they build for. Some focus on pickup beds. Others build for work trucks, flatbeds, service bodies, semis and trailers.

We're American Truckboxes, so read this with that in mind. We build aluminum and steel tool boxes in Blanchard, North Dakota, for commercial trucks, flatbeds and trailers, including custom builds. Every competitor claim below is limited to what each company states publicly, with sources listed at the end.

The short version: if you want a crossover box for a half-ton pickup, most of the brands below will serve you well. If you're outfitting a flatbed, service body, semi or fleet, the list gets shorter.

The manufacturers, one by one

American Truckboxes (ATB)

American Truckboxes builds heavy-duty aluminum and steel tool boxes in Blanchard, North Dakota. Every box is manufactured, assembled and shipped from North Dakota. The line covers medium and heavy trucks: underbody, top mount, drawer utility, tunnel, step saddle, battery, in-frame, top chest, bed pack, cargo and rack boxes.

ATB publishes construction by model:

  • Aluminum boxes use .125" smooth with .125" tread plate across standard heavy-duty, saddle and cross lines, and .190" smooth with .125" tread on the heaviest cargo and rack boxes. Select compact boxes, such as battery boxes, use a lighter .090" / .100" construction.
  • Steel boxes use 14-gauge on cargo and top chest lines and 12-gauge on service and utility lines. Lower gauge means thicker metal.
  • Boxes use stainless-steel hinges, dual gas-spring lid supports and a powder-coated finish.

ATB also builds custom boxes to a fleet's or upfitter's exact dimensions. [Cory to confirm: what can be customized, typical lead time, how to request a quote.]

Best fit: flatbeds, service bodies, semis, trailers, and fleets that need a specific size or a box type pickup brands don't make, such as in-frame, step, battery or rack boxes.

Weather Guard

Weather Guard is owned by Werner Co. and is one of the most recognized names in pickup tool boxes. Its boxes come in steel or aluminum with an ARMOR TUF powder coat and are listed as made in the USA. The range runs from crossover and side boxes to chests, wheel well boxes and underbed boxes for flatbed and dump bodies. Its customization tool, the Custom Van Configurator, builds van interiors from Weather Guard's existing modules.

Best fit: contractors and fleets running pickups and vans, and buyers who want boxes they can find at major retailers.

Decked

Decked takes a different approach. Its products are injection-molded polymer and HDPE with steel and aluminum hardware, assembled in Defiance, Ohio. Decked is best known for its in-bed drawer system, rated at a 2,000 lb payload, plus a crossover tool box.

Best fit: pickup and van owners who want dent-proof, rust-proof storage and drawer access. Products are fitted by truck model, so they aren't built for flatbeds or commercial bodies.

Buyers Products

Buyers Products was founded in 1946 and manufactures in Mentor, Ohio. Truck boxes are one part of a broad work truck catalog that includes snowplows, hydraulics, lighting and trailer hardware. Its aluminum topsiders list .100" aluminum construction, and its boxes come in a wide range of standard sizes sold through farm stores, home centers and truck equipment distributors.

Best fit: upfitters and buyers who want standard sizes that are easy to source.

Chandler Truck Accessories

Chandler builds each tool box to order in the USA, led by its ADAPT series. It lists 10-gauge aluminum with reinforced gussets and a lifetime warranty on box construction, and positions its boxes for heavy-use industries such as oilfields and fleets.

Best fit: pickup and fleet owners who want a built-to-order crossover, gullwing or side box with interior organization options.

Crescent Jobox

Jobox, now part of the Crescent line, introduced the steel crossover truck box in 1961. Its catalog includes nearly 200 truck and job site storage products, manufactured in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The truck line includes crossover, innerside and topside boxes in aluminum and steel.

Best fit: pickup owners who want a long-established contractor brand available through retail.

How to choose a heavy-duty truck tool box

Start with the truck, not the brand. A crossover box for a pickup and an underbody box for a flatbed are different products, and most manufacturers specialize in one or the other.

  • Mounting location. Pickups take crossover, side rail, chest or in-bed drawer units. Flatbeds, service bodies and semis take underbody, top mount, step, battery and in-frame boxes.
  • Material thickness. Ask for the gauge or thickness in inches. On aluminum, .125" smooth and .125" tread plate are heavy-duty specs, with .190" on the heaviest boxes. On steel, lower gauge numbers mean thicker metal, so 12-gauge is thicker than 14-gauge.
  • Construction. Look at how seams and corners are joined, and at the hinge. Welded seams, stainless hinges and gas-spring supports affect how a box holds up to vibration and weather.
  • Finish. Bare aluminum, powder coat, and primer-plus-powder systems wear differently, especially where road salt is used.
  • Size and configuration. Standard sizes are cheaper and faster. If your body, frame or equipment doesn't fit a standard box, you need a manufacturer that builds to order.
  • Warranty and support. Terms vary a lot between brands and between standard and custom products. Read the actual warranty document for the box you're buying.

For fleets, add one more question: can the manufacturer build the same box repeatedly to the same spec across dozens of trucks

FAQs

Who makes the best truck tool box?

It depends on the truck. For pickups, Weather Guard, Decked, Chandler and Jobox are the most common choices. For flatbeds, service bodies, semis and trailers, manufacturers that build commercial boxes, such as American Truckboxes and Buyers Products, offer more mounting types and sizes.

Who builds custom heavy-duty truck tool boxes?

American Truckboxes and Chandler Truck Accessories both build truck tool boxes to order in the USA. Chandler focuses on crossover, gullwing and side boxes. American Truckboxes builds custom aluminum and steel boxes in Blanchard, North Dakota, including underbody, in-frame, step, battery and rack boxes for flatbeds, service bodies, semis and trailers.

Which truck tool box manufacturers build in the USA?

American Truckboxes (North Dakota), Buyers Products (Ohio), Crescent Jobox (Arkansas), Decked (assembled in Ohio), Weather Guard and Chandler Truck Accessories all list U.S. manufacturing for their truck boxes.

Is aluminum or steel better for a heavy-duty truck tool box?

Aluminum is lighter and resists corrosion. Steel resists dents and costs less at the same size. For commercial trucks, many buyers use aluminum to save payload and steel where impact resistance matters more.

What thickness should a heavy-duty aluminum tool box be?

Heavy-duty aluminum boxes commonly use .125" smooth and .125" tread plate, and the heaviest cargo and rack boxes step up to .190" smooth. Always check the spec for the exact model rather than the brand.
